What Marie is referring to is the obvious "storminess" that often accompanies the month of November. Indeed, some of our biggest winter storms have occurred during November. In particular, right around the 10th of the month! November 9 through 11 of 1996 saw more than 60 inches of lake effect snows in Northern Geauga County while most of the rest of us shoveled 1 to 3 feet of snow out of our driveways from that same storm! Our worst tornado outbreaks in recents years have also occurred during this month. Tornadoes smashed through Northern Ohio November 10, 2002 and again the next year on November 12! The legendary ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a fierce winter storm on Lake Superior November 10th, 1975 killing all 29 sailors aboard.
The reason for November's fury is simple: its all about the Jet Stream. The Jet Stream is a belt of strong winds that blow across the US at a height of about 18,000 feet. These winds guide all of the surface storm systems eastward across the country. In Fall, the Jet stream moves south from its summer position in Canada, on its way to its winter home in the southern US. During November, the Jet Stream sits mainly over the Great lakes and Northern Ohio! That means storm systems moving along the "Jet" will likely pass right over our heads in November! - Mark Johnson
