A stagnant front, combined with a strong impulse along it, set off thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening. Areas along and south of the front saw the most unstable conditions.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for Richland, Ashland, Wayne, Stark, Columbiana, Mahoning, Tuscarawas and Coshocton counties. Much of the viewing area was under a thunderstorm watch between 4 and 10 pm.

A tornado warning was issued for Wayne county, covering the time between 6:30 and 7 pm. Doppler radar indicated the potential for a tornado in central and eastern Wayne county. The center of circulation moved from north of Wooster east to Dalton, and then to Massillon in Stark county. The National Weather Service received wind damage reports of some trees and power lines down.

A few strong storms with heavy downpours passed over greater Cleveland during the evening. The Cleveland Indians, after starting their game on time, experienced a rain delay until 9 pm. The Cleveland Browns pre-season game also had a delay due to the lightning.
