Hi Mark,
Coming home from work at about 3:45pm today I saw in the western part of the sky something that looked like a rainbow there is no rain and the sun was very bright do you have any idea what this could be?

What you saw are called "Sundogs." They are little pieces of rainbows located just below to the left and/or right of the sun. Sundogs result when sunlight is refracted through high thin clouds made of ice crystals called Cirrus Clouds.
