- 1975 - The northeastern U.S. was in the grips of a severe storm which produced hurricane force winds along the coast, and two to three feet of snow in Maine and New Hampshire. Winds atop Mount Washington NH gusted to 140 mph.
- 1975 - The biggest snowstorm of record for so late in the season paralyzed Chicago, IL. Up to 20 inches of snow fell in extreme northeastern Illinois, and 10.9 inches of snow closed Chicago's O'Hare Airport.
- 1982 - Severe thunderstorms spawned fifty-six tornadoes in the central U.S., including seventeen in the Red iver Region of Texas and Oklahoma. The tornadoes claimed thirty lives, and injured 383 other persons. A violent tornado near Messer OK left only the carpet tack strips on the slab of a house it destroyed, and carried a motel sign thirty miles.
- 1987 - Eleven cities in Florida reported record low temperatures for the date, including Tallahassee with a reading of 31 degrees. The low of 48 degrees at Key West smashed their previous record for the date by 13 degrees.
- 1988 - Thunderstorms produced up to nine inches of rain around New Orleans LA causing 18 million dollars damage. A tornado caused three million dollars damage at Slidell LA.
- 1989 - Strong and gusty winds prevailed from California to Colorado and Wyoming. Winds gusted to 50 mph at Lancaster CA, and reached 85 mph at Berthoud Pass CO. Snow and high winds created blizzard conditions in the Colorado Rockies.
- 1990 - Thunderstorms produced severe weather in North Carolina and Virginia during the afternoon and evening. Thunderstorms produced golf ball size hail, and spawned a tornado near Chester VA which caused half a million dollars damage. A storm system produced snow and gale force winds across northern Michigan, with 8.3 inches of snow reported at Marquette. Temperatures in the north central U.S. soared from morning lows in the 20s and 30s to afternoon highs in the 60s and 70s. Eight cities reported record highs for the date, including Havre MT with a reading of 77 degrees.
- 2005 - Heavy rainfall in the Northeast produced flooding in parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Severe flooding along the Delaware River forced the evacuation of 6,000 residents in New Jersey and over 5,700 in Pennsylvania during the weekend of the 2nd-3rd. Around 3,200 homes in New Jersey were damaged, while one fatality was reported in New York .

- 1913 - The Ohio River Basin flood reached a peak. Ten inch rains over a wide area of the Ohio River Basin inundated cities in Ohio, drowning 467 persons, and causing 147 million dollars damage. The Miami River at Dayton reached a level eight feet higher than ever before. The flood, caused by warm weather and heavy rains, was the second mostly deadly of record for the nation.
- 1954 - The temperature at Allaket AK plunged to 69 degrees below zero
- 1971 - Parts of northern and central Georgia experienced their worst snow and ice storm since 1935. Two day power outages ruined two million eggs at poultry hatches. Two persons were killed when a tree landed on their car.
- 1987 - A cold front crossing the Plateau Region produced high winds in Utah causing some property damage. Winds gusted to 51 mph at Salt Lake City.
- 1988 - Twenty cities in the southwestern U.S. reported new record high temperatures for the date. Afternoon highs of 73 degrees at Flagstaff AZ, 90 degrees at Sacramento CA, 95 degrees at Santa Maria CA, 95 degrees at Los Angeles CA, 99 degrees at Tucson AZ, and 100 degrees at Phoenix AZ set records for March.
- 1989 - The "Easter Bunny" brought record warm temperatures to the central U.S. while such records were still welcome. A dozen cities reported record warm readings, including Dodge City KS with an afternoon high of 88 degrees. Strong southerly winds gusted to 51 mph at Dodge City, and reached 55 mph at Salina KS.
1990 - Fair weather prevailed across the nation for the second day in a row. Freezing temperatures were reported in the Middle Atlantic Coast Region in the wake of an early spring snowstorm. Afternoon highs were again in the 70s and 80s in the southeastern U.S., and for the ninth day in a row, temperatures in the southwestern U.S. reached the 90s.

How EARLY is Easter?
EASTER OBSERVATIONS FOR 2008 (Internet Article)

Easter cannot be any earlier than March 22 or any later than April 25 on the Gregorian calendar.
The last time Easter was this early - March 23, was in 1913. People 95 years and older may remember that. I have read the math charts that the next time it will be on March 23 will be 2160. That is 247 years from now. Enjoy it this year because you will not live long enough to celebrate another Easter this early in the year.
The last time it was observed on March 22, the earliest possible date, was in 1818. That was 190 years ago and it will not happen again until 2285 which will be 277 years from now. Nobody is alive who was living the last time it fell on the earliest possible date or will be alive when it happens again.
The last time the latest possible date for Easter fell on April 25 was in 1943, which was 65 years ago. It will happen again in 2038, which is 30 years from now. We certainly have people alive who remember when it fell on April 25, 1943 and chances are good that some alive now will experience the latest Easter can be 30 years from now.
Easter generally falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. The first day of Spring will be Thursday, March 20. The full moon will be on March 21, which will be Good Friday, the day that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Easter Sunday is the annual celebration of the Resurrection of the Christ.

- 1987 - Softball size hail caused millions of dollars damage to automobiles at Del Rio TX. Three persons were injured when hailstones crashed through a shopping mall skylight.
- 1988 - A winter storm produced heavy snow in the Central Rockies. Winds gusted to 80 mph at Centerville UT. Eighteen cities in the southeastern U.S. reported new record low temperatures for the date, including Tallahassee FL with a reading of 24 degrees.
- 1989 - A winter storm brought heavy snow and high winds to the southwestern U.S. Winds gusted to 60 mph at Lovelock NV, Salt Lake City UT, and Fort Carson CO. Snow fell at a rate of three inches per hour in the Lake Tahoe area of Nevada.
- 1990 - Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced large hail and damaging winds from northwest Florida to western South Carolina. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 75 mph at Floridatown FL. Sixteen cities across the northeastern quarter of the nation reported record high temperatures for the date. The afternoon high of 78 degrees at Burlington VT smashed their previous record for the date by 23 degrees. New York City reported a record high of 82 degrees.

1907 - A storm produced a record 5.22 inches of rain in 24 hours at Cincinnati, OH.
- 1951 - The state of Iowa experienced a record snowstorm. The storm buried Iowa City under 27 inches of snow.
- 1977 - Baltimore, MD, received an inch of rain in eight minutes.
- 1987 - A winter storm produced heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada Range of California, and the Lake Tahoe area of Nevada. Mount Rose NV received 18 inches of new snow.
- 1988 - Unseasonably cold weather prevailed from the Plateau Region to the Appalachians. Chadron NE, recently buried 33 inches of snow, was the cold spot in the nation with a low of 19 degrees below zero.
- 1989 - Residents of the southern U.S. viewed a once in a life-time display of the "Northern Lights". Unseasonably warm weather continued in the southwestern U.S. The record high of 88 degrees at Tucson AZ was their seventh in a row. In southwest Texas, the temperature at Sanderson soared from 46 degrees at 8 AM to 90 degrees at 11 AM.
- 1990 - Thunderstorms produced severe weather from northwest Texas to Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska during the day, and into the night. Severe thunderstorms spawned 59 tornadoes, including twenty-six strong or violent tornadoes, and there were about two hundred reports of large hail or damaging winds. There were forty-eight tornadoes in Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, and some of the tornadoes in those three states were the strongest of record for so early in the season, and for so far northwest in the United States. The most powerful tornado of the day was one which tore through the central Kansas community of Hesston. The tornado killed two persons, injured sixty others, and caused 22 million dollars along its 67-mile path. The tornado had a life span of two hours. Another tornado tracked 124 miles across southeastern Nebraska injuring eight persons and causing more than five million dollars damage during its three hour life span.

- 1888 - A blizzard paralyzed southeastern New York State and western New England. The storm produced 58 inches of snow at Saratoga NY, and 50 inches at Middletown CT. The blizzard was followed by record cold temperatures, and the cold and snow claimed 400 lives. New York City received 20.9 inches of snow, Albany NY reported 46.7 inches.
- 1954 - A blizzard raged from eastern Wyoming into the Black Hills of western South Dakota, while a severe ice storm was in progress from northeastern Nebraska to central Iowa. The ice storm isolated 153 towns in Iowa. Dust from the Great Plains caused brown snow, and hail and muddy rain over parts of Wisconsin and Michigan.
- 1967 - A tremendous four day storm raged across California. Winds of 90 mph closed mountain passes, heavy rains flooded the lowlands, and in sixty hours Squaw Valley CA was buried under 96 inches (eight feet) of snow.
- 1987 - Unseasonably cold weather prevailed in the southeastern U.S., with gale force winds along the Middle Atlantic Coast. A storm in the Pacific Northwest produced rain and gale force winds. Crescent City CA received 2.27 inches of rain in 24 hours.
- 1988 - A powerful storm produced high winds and heavy snow in the Upper Mississippi Valley and the Upper Great Lakes Region. Winds gusting to 70 mph produced snow drifts six feet high in Minnesota, and sent twelve foot waves on Lake Superior over the breakwalls of the ship canal at Duluth MN.
- 1989 - An early season heat wave continued in the southwestern and central U.S. Nineteen cities reported record high temperatures for the date. Wichita Falls TX, which six days earlier reported a record low of 8 above, reported a record high of 95 degrees. Childress TX was the first spot in the country in 1989 to hit the century mark.
- 1990 - Unseasonably warm weather prevailed from the Southern and Central Plains to the Southern and Middle Atlantic Coast, with afternoon highs in the 70s and 80s. Seventy-six cities reported record high temperatures for the date. Downtown Baltimore MD was the hot spot in the nation with a record high of 95 degrees, which smashed their previous record for the date by nineteen degrees. Other record highs included 89 degrees at Washington D.C. and 90 degrees at Raleigh NC.

The BIG Snow Storm '08
The storm was actually made up of two rounds of snow brought in by two separate low pressure systems. A weak low pressure center moved through the northern Great Lakes on Thursday, March 6th. That low dragged a cold front through Ohio which stalled over the Appalachian Mountains. Two low pressures formed along the stalled front in the Gulf Coast States and moved northeast toward the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. The first storm system moved along the Ohio River Friday afternoon bringing anywhere from 1 to 6 inches to Northern Ohio by 12am Saturday. The 2nd, stronger storm system arrived during the pre-dawn hours Saturday morning. Heavy snow fell at rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour from early Saturday morning through Saturday evening. By the time the snow ended around midnight Sunday morning, many spots from Cincinnati to Columbus to Cleveland and eastward were buried under 1 to 2 feet of snow!

- 1910 - The deadliest avalanche of record in the U.S. thundered down the mountains near Wellington Station WA sweeping three huge locomotive train engines and some passenger cars, snowbound on the grade leading to Stevens Pass, over the side and into a canyon, and burying them under tons of snow. The avalanche claimed the lives of more than 100 people. The station house at Wellington was also swept away.
- 1914 - High winds and heavy snow crippled New Jersey and New York State. Two feet of snow were reported at Ashbury Park, and at New York City the barometric pressure dropped to a record 28.38 inches. The storm caused complete disruption of electric power in New Jersey.
- 1980 - Norfolk, VA, received 13.7 inches of snow to push their season total to a record 41.9 inches exceeding their previous record by more than four inches.
- 1980 - An unusually large Florida tornado, 500 yards in width at times, killed one person and caused six million dollars damage near Fort Lauderdale.
- 1983 - A ferocious storm battered the Pacific coast. The storm produced heavy rain and gale force winds resulting in flooding and beach erosion, and in the mountains produced up to seven feet of snow in five days.
- 1987 - A storm crossing the Great Lakes Region produced heavy snow and gale force winds from Wisconsin to northern New England, with eight inches of snow reported at Ironwood MI.
- 1988 - Thunderstorms produced large hail and damaging winds in north central Texas. Baseball size hail was reported at Lake Kickapoo. Hail fell continuously for thirty minutes in the Iowa Park area of Wichita Falls.
- 1989 - March came in like a lion, with snow and high winds, in the northwestern U.S. Winds gusted to 86 mph in the Rosario Strait of western Washington State.
- 1990 - A series of low pressure systems moving out of the Gulf of Alaska spread high winds and heavy snow across western Alaska. Winds in the Anchorage area gusted to 69 mph at Glen Alps, and Talkeetna was buried under three feet of snow in two days. Valdez received 21.4 inches of snow, raising their total for the winter season to 482.4 inches.

- 1748 - The heaviest snow of the "Winter of the Deep Snow" in New England came to an end. Coastal Salem was left with more than thirty inches of snow on the ground.
- 1964 - Thompson Pass, AK, finished the month with 346.1 inches of snow, a record monthly total for the state of Alaska.
- 1988 - "Leap Day" proved to be a wet one for southern California, with 4.76 inches of rain reported at Tommys Creek in Ventura County. February went out like a lamb across much of the rest of the nation. Sixteen cities in the central and western U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date.

January 7-9, 2008 - Record Highs!
New record high temperatures were also set on January 8, the very next day: THE TEMPERATURE AT THE AKRON-CANTON REGIONAL AIRPORT REACHED 64 DEGREES AT 1:03 PM SETTING A NEW RECORD HIGH & BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 63 DEGREES SET IN 1937. THE TEMPERATURE AT MANSFIELD LAHM AIRPORT REACHED 62 DEGREES AT 11:40AM BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 60 DEGREES SET IN 1989. THE TEMPERATURE AT THE YOUNGSTOWN-WARREN REGIONAL AIRPORT REACHED 66 DEGREES AT 1:41 PM SETTING A NEW RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR JANUARY 8TH. THIS BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 58 DEGREES SET IN 1965.
A few record highs were also set just after midnight on Wednesday, January 9th, just ahead of a cold front: THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 61 DEGREES AT 1:30 AM AT CLEVELAND HOPKINS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. THIS TIED THE RECORD HIGH SET ON JANUARY 9, 1937. AT THE MANSFIELD LAHM AIRPORT, THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 59 DEGREES AT 12:53 AM, BREAKING THE OLD RECORD OF 57 DEGREES SET ON JANUARY 9, 1965. THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 64 DEGREES AT 12:32 AM THIS MORNING AT THE YOUNGSTOWN-WARREN REGIONAL AIRPORT. THIS BROKE THE OLD RECORD OF 61 DEGREES SET ON JANUARY 9, 1946. On This Day In Weather History
- 1882 - Hot and dry winds caused tree foliage in eastern Kansas to wither and crumble.
- 1977 - Thunderstorms deluged the Kansas City area with torrential rains in the early morning hours, and then again that evening. Some places were deluged with more than six inches of rain twice that day, with up to 18 inches of rain reported at Independence MO. Flooding claimed the lives of 25 persons. The Country Club Plaza area was hardest hit. 2000 vehicles had to be towed following the storm, 150 of which had to be pulled out of Brush Creek, which runs through the Plaza area.
- 1979 - Hurricane Frederick smashed into the Mobile Bay area of Alabama packing 132 mph winds. Winds gusts to 145 mph were reported as the eye of the hurricane moved over Dauphin Island AL, just west of Mobile. Frederick produced a fifteen foot storm surge near the mouth of Mobile Bay. The hurricane was the costliest in U.S. history causing 2.3 billion dollars damage.
- 1987 - Showers and thunderstorms produced heavy rain which caused flooding in North Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Parts of Virginia received 3 to 4 inches of rain in just two hours early in the day. Later in the day, three to five inch rains deluged Cumberland County of south central Pennsylvania. Evening thunderstorms produced seven inches of rain at Marysville PA, most of which fell in three hours time.
- 1988 - An afternoon tornado spawned a tornado which skipped across northern sections of Indianapolis IN damaging roofs and automobiles. It was the first tornado in central Indiana in September in nearly forty years of records. Hurricane Gilbert plowed across the island of Jamaica, and by the end of the day was headed for the Cayman Islands, packing winds of 125 mph.
- 1989 - Snow whitened the mountains and foothills of northeastern Colorado, with eight inches reported at Buckhorn Mountain, west of Fort Collins. Two to three inches fell around Denver, causing great havoc during the evening rush hour. Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the Southern Plains Region between mid afternoon and early the next morning. Thunderstorms produced hail three inches in diameter at Roswell NM, and wind gusts greater than 98 mph at Henryetta OK. Thunderstorms also produced torrential rains, with more than seven inches at Scotland TX, and more than six inches at Yukon OK.

- 1881 - Forest fires in Michigan and Ontario resulted in 'Yellow Day' in the northeastern U.S. Twenty villages in Michigan burned, and a total of 500 persons were killed. Fires caused 2.3 million dollars in losses near Lake Huron. Candles were needed at the noon hour.
- 1929 - Iowa's earliest snow of record occurred as a few flakes were noted at 9 AM at Alton
- 1987 - Thunderstorms produced more than seven inches of rain in Georgia. Four persons drowned, and two others suffered injury, as three couples attempted to cross Mills Stone Creek at Echols Mill in their automobile. Smoke from forest fires in California and Oregon spread across Utah into western Colorado.
- 1988 - Unseasonably cool weather prevailed across the north central and northeastern U.S. Thirty cities reported record low temperatures for the date, including Saint Joseph MO with a reading of 38 degrees. A low of 44 degrees at Indianapolis IN was their coolest reading of record for so early in the season. The mercury dipped to 31 degrees at Hibbing MN and Philips WI.
- 1989 - An early afternoon thunderstorm produced wind gusts to 104 mph at Winterhaven, FL, flipping over four airplanes, and damaging five others. The high winds also damaged a hangar and three other buildings. A cold front produced strong winds and blowing dust in the Northern High Plains, with gusts to 54 mph reported at Buffalo SD. Powerful Hurricane Gabrielle and strong easterly winds combined to create waves up to ten feet high along the southern half of the Atlantic coast.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 5TH 2007
- 1925 - The temperature at Centerville, AL, soars to 112 degrees to establish a state record. Every reporting station in Alabama was 100 degrees or above that afternoon.
- 1933 - A hurricane hit Brownsville, TX, killing forty persons and causing 12 million dollars damage.
- 1950 - Hurricane Easy produced the greatest 24 hour rainfall in U.S. weather records. The hurricane deluged Yankeetown, on the upper west coast of Florida, with 38.7 inches of rain.
- 1975 - Strong winds reduced visibilities to near zero in blowing dust resulting in a 22-car chain reaction accident on Interstate 10 near Toltec AZ. Two persons were killed, and 14 others were injured.
- 1987 - Thunderstorms over the Southern and Middle Atlantic Coast States drenched Charleston, SC, with 5.50 inches of rain, and a total of 13.50 inches in two days, flooding homes, and leaving roads and bridges under water. (The National Weather Summary) A tropical storm which formed off the South Atlantic coast was responsible for torrential rains over coastal regions of South Carolina. Between the 30th of August and the 8th of September, Charleston SC received 18.44 inches of rain. The heavy rains caused extensive flooding around the city of Charleston, seriously damaged cotton crops in the eastern part of the state, and resulted in an unusually high number of mosquitos.
- 1988 - Five days of heavy rain commenced in west central Florida. Up to 20 inches of rain in four days resulted in extensive urban flooding, and evacuation of 1000 homes. Flooding claimed four lives, and caused more than five million dollars proprty damage.
- 1989 - Thunderstorms produced six to ten inches of rain in south central Kansas between 6 AM and Noon. Serious flooding was reported around Wichita, with water four feet deep along some roads. A cold front crossing the Northern High Plains Region produced wind gusts to 63 mph at Sheridan WY.

When Does Spring Begin? The Debate!
You are correct to assert that Spring begins at 00:07 UTC on March 21st, 2007. Its the UTC that's confusing. UTC stands for Universal Coordinated Time. Its basically the time something occurs at the "Prime Meridian" near Greenwich England. UTC is also known as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Whether it says UTC or GMT, the time is the same. Here in Northern Ohio, we are 4 hours BEHIND Greenwich England's time (GMT/UTC)...therefore, to get Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), you have to subtract 4 hours. So, Spring begins at 00:07 GMT/UTC on March 21st in Greenwich England... which is 8:07 pm EDT March 20th here in Northern Ohio. Hope this helps! - Mark Johnson

Severe thunderstorms are one of the most common weather phenomena we experience here in Northeast Ohio.So lets take a look at what a severe thunderstorm is and how it forms. A thunderstorm is a storm produced by cumulonimbus clouds and must have lightning and thunder. It is usually accompanied by gusty winds, heavy rains and sometimes hail. The main ingredients for the development of a severe thunderstorm are:
Unstable air
Wind shear (wind from different directions)
Forced Lift (ex. a cold front)
Ample Moisture

Severe thunderstorms can form along a cold front and also out ahead of a cold front, sometimes in the form of a squall line. For a storm to be considered severe it must meet certain criteria. According to The National Weather Service a thunderstorm must have:
Winds greater than 58 mph
Hail greater than 3/4 inch(penny size)
Or a tornado
Here are some fun facts about thunderstorms. 2000 thunderstorms are in progress at any given time. There are 45,000 thunderstorms happening each day around the world with 16 million thunderstorms annually. Lighting strikes the Earth 100 times each second. Here in the states we experience 100,000 thunderstorms with millions of lightning strikes each year.

On Your Side for Safety: Severe Weather Threats: Tornados
On average Ohio experiences about 16 tornados a year according to the National Weather Service. The Xenia tornado is one of the more noteable tornados in Ohio's history. It was part of a Super Outbreak in 1974 that killed 41 people and injured 1,379. Here in Northeast Ohio one of the deadliest outbreaks happened on "Palm Sunday" 1965. 57 people died and the destructive path damaged 8 Ohio counties including Cuyahoga and Lorain
A tornado is a violently rotating column of air in contact with the earth's surface that comes from a thunderstorm. If the column of air is "Not" in contact with the ground, then it's classified as a funnel cloud. First things first, in order to have a tornado you need a thunderstorm. Next we need rotating columns of air from different directions. A thunderstorm can reach heights in the atmosphere as high as 50,000 ft. Winds coming from different directions will eventually begin to literally twist the air in the atmosphere. This twisting motion will stretch over time and eventually form a tornado. Here are a facts about tornados. The highest recorded wind speed on record was 318 mph at Bridge Creek and Moore Oklahoma on May 3, 1999. The widest observed path was 2 1/2 miles wide at Hallam Nebraska on May 22, 2004! While the longest destructive path was 219 miles long by the Tri State tornado that moved through Illinois, Indianna, and Missouri on March 18,1925.

Mark's Response: Keep in mind that our Winter Season is literally only two weeks old...So we've got a lot of time to catch up on snowfall and cold temperatures. El Nino Winters are commonly warmer than normal with much less snow. December 2006 was the 8th warmest on record. But, we've seen warmer Decembers before here in Northern Ohio. FULL MOON
Relatively clear skies this morning made perfect viewing for the first full moon of 2007. We had many people reporting seeing rings around the moon. Is this a "Moonbow", well sort of. So what does cause the rings around the moon? According to the California Institute of Technology rings around the moon are caused when moonlight passes through thin clouds of ice crystals high in Earth's atmosphere. As moonlight passes through the ice crystals, it is bent in a way similar to light passing through a lens. The shape of the ice crystals causes the moonlight to be focused into a ring. This is similar to the way water droplets in the lower atmosphere can bend sunlight to create a rainbow.

"CLEAR MOON, FROST SOON."
On a clear night in late fall, winter or spring, the surface of the earth will rapidly cool down as heat escapes into the atmosphere. Clouds often trap the heat next to the surface. If temperatures are cold enough, on a clear night with light winds, frost is likely.
"RED SKY AT NIGHT, SAILORS DELIGHT. RED SKY IN THE MORNING, SAILORS TAKE WARNING."
This saying goes back alooong way! The Bible even mentions the phenomena in Matthew 16:1-3: "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times."
When the western sky is mainly clear, a red sunset is likely. As the sun sets, its light shines through more of the lower atmosphere. The dust, salt, smoke and pollution scatter the blues and violet colors of the visible light spectrum. That leaves the oranges and reds. So a red sky at night means fair weather is likely on its way in.
The sky can also be red in the morning in the eastern sky. A red sky in the east means that fair weather has already moved through and is actually moving away. Look out for clouds and precipitation which often follows fair weather. A red sky in the morning in the east will likely mean lousy weather will soon follow.
"MARE'S TAILS AND MACKEREL SCALES MAKE TALL SHIPS TAKE IN THEIR SAILS." Cirrocumulus clouds are often called mackerel clouds because they resemble fish scales.. Cirrocumulus are indicators of an approaching warm front. A a warm front passes, wind will shift to the south. Warm fronts can also bring rain to the area.
"A YEAR OF SNOW, A YEAR OF PLENTY."
Lots of snow replenishes the ground water table. Persistent snow on farmland and orchards also insulates and protects tender plant buds, wheat and grasses. Several months of snow cover in winter will delay budding until consistently warmer weather arrives. Buds are less likely to be damaged by late frosts. More buds mean more fruits and vegetables to harvest later in the fall!
"A HALO AROUND THE SUN OR MOON MEANS RAIN OR SNOW IS COMING SOON."
Moisture begins to increase ahead of an approaching warm front often in the upper levels of the atmosphere first. So, if a warm frontal boundary is moving your way, chances are you would see high, thin cirrus clouds begin to move into hours or days ahead of the front. Cirrus clouds are made of ice crystals and are often transparent. Light from the sun or moon will shine through these cirrus clouds and create that classic "halo effect" or "ring" around the sun or moon. Rain or snow will not always accompany a warm front, but there is a higher probability of precipitation after a halo is seen.
"RAINBOW IN THE MORNING GIVES YOU FAIR WARNING."
Since the sun rises in the east, a visible rainbow develops in rain showers to your west. Rainbows form when sunlight is refracted through raindrops. Since weather moves mainly from west to east, a morning rainbow means rain is west of you and likely headed your way!
"WHEN STARS DO HUDDLE, THE EARTH WILL SOON BECOME A PUDDLE."
On a clear night, we see stars in every direction. As clouds begin to move into the area, stars are blocked in some areas but not in others. Stars are only visible in the clear spots and appear as clusters of stars amongst the clouds. Increasing clouds often bring rain...So get ready for puddles when clouds increase and stars appear to huddle in the night sky.
A few more sayings that have basis in scientific fact:
*Many flowers actually close up as a storm approaches due to increasing humidity. This prevents the rain from washing away the flowers pollen.
*The leaves of some trees curl just before a storm.
*Surface gust fronts ahead of approaching thunderstorms rustle the leaves of trees exposing their undersides.
*Sound travels better in higher humidity. Some English people gauged the chances of rain by the clarity with which they heard church bells sound.
A drop in barometric pressure often affects people with joint diseases, bad teeth, recently healed broken bones, or corns and bunions, bringing pain or pressure to those areas of the body.
Cicadas can't vibrate their wings when the humidity is very high, so may be silent when rain is approaching. Flying insects are more active when the air pressure drops and stay closer to the ground, so they seem to be swarming before a rain storm.
The chirping of a cricket has been shown to provide a close indication of air temperature. By counting the number of cricket chirps in a 14-second period and adding 40, the total will equal the air temperature to within one degree 75% of the time.
